The International Energy Conservation Code (IECC)

The International Energy Conservation Code sets standards for the energy efficiency of residential construction.
Three chapters of the code are of key importance:

Chapter 4: Residential Building Design by Systems Analysis and Design of Buildings Utilizing Renewable Energy Sources
This chapter establishes design criteria in terms of total energy use by a residential building, including all systems.

Chapter 5: Residential Building Design by Component Performance Approach
Shows the approved levels of energy efficiency for ceilings, walls, windows, doors, floors and other building components, as well as requirements for air sealing

Chapter 6: Simplified Prescriptive Requirements for Residential Buildings
Translates Chapter 5’s requirements into real world construction methods.

Example: A 2000 sq. ft heated space in Lexington (Zone 10), KY with 1800 sq. ft. of wall area and 270 sq. ft. of exterior windows and doors.
Window Fraction = 270/1800 = 15 percent
